Local News Anchor Dies in Georgia Car Accident

A beloved news anchor in Savannah, Georgia, passed away in a car accident in the early morning hours of Sunday, November 20. Don Logana, who served as an investigative reporter with WTOC-TV, was involved in a crash on the Talmade Memorial Bridge, which crosses the Savannah and Little Black rivers.

Just a couple hours earlier, Logana was at the same bridge reporting on another accident in which a firefighter had died while rescuing people who had fallen into the Savannah River after a loading dock collapsed. His colleagues were shocked by the news, reflecting on Logana’s generous nature, dedication to his craft and rich sense of humor. In addition to his work as an investigative journalist, he also frequently anchored the morning news on WTOC.

It is still unclear what exactly caused the accident. However, police say Logana was not wearing a seatbelt at the time and that speed could have been a factor.

A dangerous stretch of highway

The Talmade Bridge has seen its fair share of serious car accidents over the years. In October, a man from Bluffton, South Carolina, died from injuries sustained in a crash involving two semi-trucks. According to law enforcement officers, one semi-truck driver had pulled over to help another truck that had stalled at the side of the road. A BMW then slammed into the first truck, forcing it forward and striking one of the truck drivers. He died at the scene.

Law enforcement officials often refer to the Talmade Bridge as “Speedway Boulevard” due to motorists’ tendency to travel too fast for conditions. In fact, the Jasper County coroner was quoted in one article as saying there are numerous crashes per year on that particular stretch of road.
